Kyaing Tong

Kyaing Tong is the capital city of the Golden Triangle Region. It is only 170 km away from Tachileik and it takes about 3 hours by 4WD. Visitors are allowed to cross into this border town with Border Passes. Kyaing Tong is inhabited by ethnic tribes such as Wa, Shan, Akha and Lahu. Kyaing Tong is full of temples, colonial buildings, lakes and is the most scenic town in Shan State. Kyaing Tong also carries the definition of “Walled City of Tung”.

Kyaing Tong is built around a lake. And as the legend say, there was a powerful magician called “Tungkalasi” who used his magic staff to drain a lake of near-sea proportion. Then the city was built around it. Loi-mwe National Park, one hour drive from Kyaing-tong, situated 5542 feet-above sea level could be toured around. During British colonial rule (1885-1940), one Governor House was built for Summer Residence, and a Church: interesting places to visit at Loi-mwe. Some trekking tours can be made to nearby villages.
